A Guide To Understanding Baby Car Seats

By : April Kerr

If you own a car and have a baby then you really need to buy yourself a baby car seat if you care about safety. It's always advisable that you buy a good baby car seat as soon as you leave the hospital with your baby, or you should even see to this before hand. You might end up buying the car seat yourself or your friends and family might buy it for you.

Because safety is so very important, spending a bit of time understanding what all the different types of car seats are and what type you need to be buying is well worth it. You might think that this process would be very simple but unfortunately isn't really.

The type of car seat you buy will greatly depend on the weight and height of your baby. Some seats are specifically designed to hold and protect a new born baby whilst others are designed for older babies of about 12 months old. This difference is very important and it's essential that you understand this because car accidents can be fatal.

If you purchase a car seat which is either too big or too small for your child then the seat won't be able to properly protect during an accident. Remember, baby seats aren't like clothes; you shouldn't buy one too large and wait for them to grow into it. If you do see a good deal on a larger seat, by all means by it, but only use it when your child is the correct age.

Instead of buying differently sized seats as your child ages, you might want to look at buying a system that can be converted between the different sizes and can also then be turned into a booster seat. Although they do cost more money to begin with, in the long run you will probably be glad you paid the extra. Children often need to use some sort of car seat up to the age of 5 or even 6 so planning ahead can be prudent. There are also certain laws about car seats in some areas so make sure you understand what these are.

No body ever said having a baby was inexpensive, there are so many different items you need to buy and a car seat is probably one of the most important due to the safety issues. When it comes to the safety of car seats, there are strict regulations in place so that you can be confident you are getting quality. However, no matter what type you buy, your car baby seat will be useless if it isn't installed correctly so this is something you should seriously look into.
